Melpomene

Melpomene, the crying mask in the Ancient Greek theatre, but also the meaning of joy and dance. It shows the conflict and diversity in human society.

As a female artist collective we dealt with the topic of the masks of society and the personal masks we are wearing. We believe that everyone is wearing a mask in any situation. Depending on the situation and interaction different kind of masks come to use. But what happens when we are at home, just by ourselves ? Do we still wear a mask or are there moments in which we are pure and free of them? Or did we become one with the mask and forgot who we are behind it? Each of us artists has a different perspective on the meaning of a mask. It might be a way of protection, a possibility to change persona, it can give us freedom or put us in jail. Wearing a mask can make us feel light or heavy at the same time. The artists work will show you a variety of interpretations of what the mask means to us and opens questions what your perspective on it can be.
